MISSING FROM THE ODNB
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has some scandalous omissions
notably the following locomotive engineers;
Beyer
Bowen Cooke
Cudworth
Ivatt: father and son
Johnson
Jones (David of the Highland)
Kirtley: Matthew and other members of
family
Maunsell
Markham (decisive innovator of coal burning
fireboxes)
Collett
Riddles
Authors of railway literature appear to be limited to O.S. Nock (presumably
because of its gargantuan nature): the following are missing:
Ahrons
Dow: certainly George (and probably Andrew)
Ellis
Mike Chrimes has ensured that Civil Engineers are well represented and contributed many of the actual entries, which are models of how to write such entries. The mechanical engineers need a champion capable of producing concise, but thorough (the present ODNB entry for Aspinall is an excellent example of how not to do it) biographies.
